Help us Help Them History

In 2001, after the World Trade Center attack in New York, there were massive fund raising efforts for the Firefighters and Police Officers who were victims of 9-11. An adverse effect of these efforts, was the fact that our charities here at home were suffering. Some of the charities that The UPFFA had supported financially were running out of funds. The UPFFA decided the timing was right to use the “positive image” of the firefighter to help them raise money.
Some of the efforts that the UPFFA did were the following during the holiday season but not limited too.

“Firefighter Ring the Bell”, Firefighters would gather in numbers and surround every entrance to a chosen shopping mall. Firefighters ad a Salvation Army kettle per every two firefighters and rang the bell for The Salvation Army. This 8 hour effort has proved to be the biggest fund raising day during the holidays for The Salvation Army.

“Food Drives”, UPFFA members would challenge local media celebrities and do a timed “shopping spree” in a local grocery store. This event would be a competition between the media and the UPFFA. At the end of the event UPFFA Charities would pay for the groceries and donate them to The St. Mary’s Food Bank.
Other food drives include our Partnership with Sleep America and KSLX Radio and a three day / 12 per day food drive in front of different Sleep American Stores.

“Turkey Drives”, The UPFFA participates in several Turkey Drives during the holiday season. The first one is right before Thanksgiving with TV3. Firefighters not only purchase several frozen turkeys and donate them to The Salvation Army, firefighters from all the chapters stay on site helping people unload Turkeys and challenge other organizations to participate.
The UPFFA also helps with the grocery store chains when they are doing their turkey drives for The St. Mary’s Food Bank.

“UPFFA Coat Drive”, The UPFFA partners with local radio outlets for our annual coat drive. This one day / 12 hour effort is done at a local mall. On a Thursday morning firefighters gather NEW coats for homeless children. By the end of the day there are around 2000 coats gathered. The following Saturday they are handed out to the homeless children at The Salvation Army campus.

“Annual Water Drive”, During the summer months The UPFFA participates in an annual water drive for The Salvation Army’s “Water Stations”. Usually in mid June , Firefighters from every chapter will donate bottled water to this cause. They will also stay at the event to help people unload water , sun screen and hats.

“Annual Firefighter Toy Drive”, Drop boxes are left at all the fire stations for the public to drop off toys for underprivileged kids. Toy are also collected by UPFFA members at various toy stores and  shopping locations.
These toys are then dispersed to different families and organizations throughout our community.
